Being Silent

January 22, 2012

I wrestle with the idea of God fighting my battles for me. Today I read from Exodus and came to Ex 14:14 “The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” I can’t tell you how difficult that is for me! I want to fight because I want to say “I did it! It was me who won!” Yet, the Lord commands His people to be silent, to wait and see His victory. I suppose the larger problem for me is that I do not long for the Lord’s victory! Instead, as stated above, I long for my own victories. May it be that as I am silent, I will have the result that God states a few verses after v.14 — “then they shall know that I am the LORD.”

Same-sex Marriage

February 24, 2011
Some of you probably saw the news that the same-sex marriage legislation may come before the Maryland House today.  There was a very informative article in yesterday’s Maryland Independent addressing the issue.  Please see link:
http://www.somdnews.com/stories/02232011/indytop172123_32408.shtml
In short, our local rep, Mac Middleton, predicts that there are enough votes in the Maryland house to pass the bill.  He then states that the issue will be countered with a petition to make it a state-wide referendum vote (as has happened in other states, most notably California).  It will go to the public and most likely be defeated and then become as he states “a third rail issue” that will be essentially left alone.

Now, what does this mean for us as Christian body that believes God’s Word clearly defines marriage as that between a man and a woman?  In other words, if it appears that things are going to play out “favorably” anyway, should we do anything at all?  By all means, yes!  I see a two-fold approach here.  First, the Church needs to instruct the community not only what is God’s standard re marriage but also why His standard is the most excellent way.  I.e. we’re not just to say “we’re against this thing” but also “why” in an intelligent and winsome way.  This may mean that some of you articulate folks should write editorials and such.  This also means your being willing and able to talk about these things with those at your workplace and in your neighborhood.  This leads to the second aspect of one’s approach to this issue – witness.  This is a great springboard for talking about the gospel.  After all, is not marriage a picture of God’s love for His people?  In short, let us not fear that this issue is coming up in our state (its been brewing for years).  Instead, let us speak God’s truth and in the process teach our community why God’s design of marriage is the most excellent way.

PM now reunited with AM service

February 5, 2011

Our Sunday evening service held at Christ Church has been closed down.  Those who attended this service are now worshiping at the AM venue.  Why did we close down the service?  Needless to say, it was not an easy decision to do so – our worship was rich and inviting there!  Yet, as we considered several factors, namely how to best reach our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ, we determined that it is better for us to merge both services and focus on building a better AM venue.  Thanks to those who helped to make the evening service be so wonderful!  We believe that as Charles County becomes more urban and daresay cosmopolitan in the coming years (after all we should expect more influence of DC to come to our area) that there will be need to resurrect the evening service for those who are on more of a PM schedule.  Until then, please join us at the AM worship campus!
